Entertaining

Inviting people over is fun! I enjoy every aspect of it, from planning the guest list, choosing the date, selecting the menu, finding new recipes, setting the table, cooking and finally the conversation during the course of the meal.

A meeting, in early spring (notice the magnolia branch with blossoms), with the neighbors to discuss the paving of our road.

To me entertaining is an occasion. When I invite someone to my home I want them to feel special. Anyone can casually put a few things together and have a nice dinner or lunch. Fewer people will take the time for something more than casual arrangements. I prefer to take a more formal approach.

A fall lunch for three.

This often means place card holders at each place indicating where every person sits at the table. I have a nice collection to choose from – silver, crystal, porcelain, and plastic. There is never a mix up of where one should sit.

A mid-winter menu with guests from Russia.

Menus are another nice thing to use at dinner. They can be a creative way to let people know what to expect at dinner.

An asian inspired dinner – note the sterling chop-sticks. Andrew cleverly folded the menu and decorated it to look like a fish.
The menu in Burmese and English.
A delightful pre-Christmas dinner.

Sterling flatware, china, crystal, pressed napkins and tablecloths are all luxuries to make the meal special. I like the feel of these items as much as I like their appearance. Even with one’s eyes closed it is possible to tell the difference between a sterling spoon and a plain metal spoon.

A small get together to meet the neighbors.
Cupcakes for everyone. It was February and we were anxious for spring to come.

A seasonal arrangement on the table, and candles complete the mood. Time for the conversation to begin.

A very casual summer breakfast on the porch with weekend guests from Denver.

All the preparations may take longer, but my guests are worth the extra effort. How do you like to entertain?
